I like it when the city is unreasonably noisy: mariachis at noon on a Wednesday. The megaphone wail of tamaleros in their trucks. Demonstrations at the Monument when I’m trying to nap. I love this about cities: they remind you that you lack control; you are one among many; your soundscape is not your own. We are all here takingĀ up space & our soundwaves do too. Noise, overhearing, eavesdropping, suggests interconnectedness. There’s a reason they call it “making ourselves heard.”
